X Factor is very close to ending its successful run, they names of the bands and performers is getting shorter by the week, and I think we have surpassed the half point. Every week, the show loses a band/artist. The Egyptian hip-hop R&B band seems to all but have secured winning the first season--if they do they might be the first band to win such a show in the Arab world

Every act is trying to win the title, each has a story to tell, and each wants that contract, but most of all winning the people and their votes. I feel Ibrahim Abdel Azim from Libya might be in the danger zone. Same goes for the Miraya band, they may also be in the same position.

I feel the Moroccan contestant, Mohammed El Rifi will go far, he is the treat that everyone loves, so mark my word he will be among the three finalists. The same goes for Hossam from Lebanon for starter the show is being filmed in Lebanon and I think he will be in for some time. If talent is the only way, the kid from Oman will be traveling far, the dude is a beast on stage--not a great choice.

Marwa had a good night, and the judges showered her with praises. She got better, but not sure if she has the vocal muscles to shine. Iman had a classical song to cover, I think she did well and owned the song--I loved how she took the song and made it work for her. Each judge loves his/her teams, but this is becoming harder to hide as the list narrows.

Aside from making perhaps the coolest and most artsy and meaning rich album cover, Indie band Massar Egbari makes delightful music, and their new album "Eqra El Khaber" or "Read This News" shows the band has morphed into something huge. Not to mention how the band also has one of the catchiest names MASSAR EGBARI means “Compulsory Detour”, which resembles the society we live in today. They specifically chose this title as it explains how we are expected, or rather, dictated to behave and dress in certain manners. Both, in title and in spirit, the band pokes fun at typical social norms and trends, which is clearly reflected in their music and chosen lyrics.

In 2007 the band made its international debut and has traveled the Arab world (and Turkey) taking their music into new lands. I have come to appreciate their balance in finding good lyrics, and fresh sounding music--while they sound a bit more Western than Egyptian, their stories will always be told in Egypt for some time to come.

It seems that their music constantly gets better, the more live shows they book. They really inject a lot of excitement in the indie music scene  and by the way other than ticket sales and record, they have not gone commercial like doing soda and hair gel ads. This allows them to concentrate on their music, and perfecting their craft. I have also loved how they keep away form politics, yet kept up their connection with the people and their woes.

You get a little funk, a little jazz, some rock and a hell of a ride the minds of the band members have created. I appreciate the variety in vocalists the band features. Unlike many other indie bands in Egypt, MASSAR EGBARI has more than on vocalist who can hook listeners. I love the songs I listened to so far, El-Mroor if funky. The title song plays like a lounge music yet its lyrics are very dark about unemployment. This album is a successful attempt to declare the band's inception into the mainstream.

The interesting thing about the band is that they play through each song until you know whats happening each second. They have mastered each song by playing them off by heart and concentrate on what everyone else is playing. Thus, the band members are a good live musician is one that can feel the pulse of the crowd and become fueled by their energy. It takes more than practice practice practice to be a good musician. Some things can't be taught. UTN1 Band-mates were born with the chops for those live gigs.

As for AlSalem, he is the kind of entertainer who talks to the crowd and allows them to be apart of the show. He knows how to just relax and have fun. He is not a a show-off, but he knows that he is the attraction and the audience appreciate that.

I think X factor is getting to narrow their list of talented names. They are ready to show off their finest voices and show off. One of those is a guy with the name Ibrahim, he is Libyan and he is ready to make them proud--I like him. He makes good choices and shows a level of maturity when doing cover songs. He might be going home, Elissa and Wael were unkind to him. Hussein and Carole were supportive. He was hurt becasue Libya could not vote due to their issues with telecommunication.

The other lady is Salwa whose talent is hard to miss. She seems to have the face for it, she is ready to entertain. Her covers of those English songs are something of a novelty, she has it figured out. She has the stage presence and gets in the act. She does the rock star persona very well, though her latest performance left something to be desired. She is also the youngest contestant and she is from Morocco.

I like this guy, he seems to have his quirks going right for him. He does the old man trapped in a young man's body so well. He is Lebanese and from the same area as Wael Kfoury.

I think the judges have challenged him to bring the best in him.  He is very good and Jordan will vote him in and push his brand.

This is the most unique voice, he is a young Moroccan artist. I love his voice, he is very different and no one out there will be able to copy him. Think a unique George Wassouf, a voice that you cannot help but love even so you may not always understand it. The fans love this dude, and give him the votes. Certainly the boys love him. He is the candy of this show, he actually has divided the panle Elissa and Hussein are among his biggest cheerleaders.

The Omani dude who is like a magician. I love this dude, he always thinks about the song is his last song, so he goes all in. The judges really like him and he is a crowd pleaser  he knows how to show love and appreciation. He does wonders when he holds the microphone. It's safe to say he will go far, because even people outside Oman\love him--he might be the second artists to be born in that country.  Another thing, he performs like he is a Western star focuses on the show part, and not just the song.

Another band with a very cool name, ninja is ready they come to us from the West, they have the hustle and flow thing going for them. They do rap, and each come with a story they have gone far with the Western bloc of the Arab world. They are all about energy and joy. They are fun to see them live, their fusion works to their advantage. I believe they are Tunisian. They took a challenge and turned a Lebanese dance song to their own style. Tunisians have to be really good to make it out and thoe guys are no different, they hit all the right notes.

Egypt's hottest and biggest rock band started as an indie band till they all of a sudden got big. Commercial money started flowing, promoting soft drinks, energy drinks and just about anything. They are covted on TV shows and asked to comment on all things Egypt. They have toured the world and back, and still they are still the most popular band in Egypt.

Their fan base keeps on growing, and they sort of reach out for the cool aisle. More and more they are focused on their look, and outfits. New haircuts and grooming are in order, they now look like every other mainstream American band. What still sets them apart is their lyrics, passion and messages about changes in Egypt.

They are back with a new song that serves as the soundtrack for an upcoming indie film about the Revolution in Egypt. This is an A list film with top talents, the song is way out there, about the meaning of change and to quote, the nightmare in your dreams.

They pick on the security officers in Egypt, their torture and abuse methods. And doing all that in an abandoned building. But do not worry their guitar and vocals are still on the money. This is the anti-establishment, it sets Egypt as the people vs. everyone else including the politicians and people with authority. Amir Eid wrote the dazzling lyrics and I tell you they sound as a shot in the ear. Their fire in the belly is still on.

Rock Stars Cannot Govern Nor Can They Rule

Rock music is about saying no to the man, it's about defying the powers and the authority. But to run a country, you are given powers and authority to apply the rule of law. Naturally, rock stars do not like rules and did hate to be told what to do.

So while Morsi is trying to run the government of Egypt, its people and institutions, some out there are on the streets protesting. They want him in less than six month to bring miracles, to bring order to a very chaotic surrounding. While he has done a fair share of mistakes, I think the people of Egypt--or the ones protesting in the streets are being too quick to jump the gun. 

I had those thoughts when I was watching the latest live version of Cairokee's popular song "Spread Your Wings", a rock song about realizing one's true call and living their potential. While clever lyrics are to be celebrated, songs do not really run a country. The politics is messy, we can have heroes all we want, but at the end, they will have to take some steps. Those steps will never be approved by everyone. So difference and resentment is a human nature.

What we cannot do is be violent to one another. Like those police in the streets of Egypt beating up protesters  You should not be doing that. On the flip side, thugs and bullies are also on the streets and those should not be mistaken for real citizens who have concerts for the direction of the country. Cairokee is one of many bands that has engaged in making music about dreams and aspirations, I think this is the right time for such bands to make songs about giving peace a change.

I have no doubt in my mind that Morsi loved Egypt and those who support him love her as much. And yes, those who are protesting him believe in Egypt too and care for it. When the dust settle I do not want to see Egyptians bringing destruction to the Egypt we all love.

On International Women's Day Comes This Subtitled Dream

Women do not exactly have easy in Egypt, it's an observation from watching from the outside and the many dramas airing on TV today.

So this International Women's Day comes a song by one of the finest rappers Egypt have come to know Ahmed Zap Tharwat. He is the socially responsible rapper who promotes good virtue, patriotism and being good. And a first time guest or perhaps the main attraction vocalist Sherine.

Together they have a song about achieve one's dreams--mostly catering to women on their day of empowerment. The song puts to focus all the negative commentary and treatment women are subjected to in Egypt and beyond. They are not the only ones locking in the females. Some even make the case about the mistreatment of women even in places like America.

A song against violence, harassment, and discrimination. It's a smart song about women who want to take a challenge and make something new.  I dig the guitar and the many back stories the music videos brings to light.

These Young Pharos Have Moved Me

On X Factor there is a group of R and B / Rap band made up of there young folks who go to college. There are two dudes and one fine lady that sounds to have come from a place like Chicago or Detroit Motown. They are 17, 18 and 19 years of age and they have already rocked the show unlike any other act.

I am not a big fan of rag tag rap, but these guys really have a working formula to bring a wife audience to their songs--Angry Arabic lyrics and smooth English lines that make you think. The trio blends a number of styles and Arabic dialect to talk about issues of important to the Arab mainstream and the young people. The judges have showered them with love and praises.

Check them out, and get to enjoy their own writing which give them an extra zinger as they take on the stage, they really know how to cheer up the room. They got four Yeses and they indeed deserved everyone of them. I am consider myself a fan, now the burden on them to make a worthy followup for this song that has won them fame.

Marwa Nasr And The Republic Sweet Collaboration

Marwa Nasr teaches boys about the importance of taking care of their ladies. To get more boys interested  she brought the manly band The Republic. In the song, the artist goes the extra mile in telling man what it feels to be a female. You need to put her in your heart, I left everything behind to love you....etc.

A sweet song if you are grownup woman, and there is a lot of love. But the Republic also keeps things in check as a men they have something to say about this ordeal. They have written the English Lyrics and their rap flies very high. Their remix of the song makes it a lot more fun than the original.

Marwa's loving husband and music producer can be seen toward the end working behind the scenes, making sure this is a hit collaboration. I do not find much info on the band, but they got something making them perfect as a guest in those mega summer concerts. I will be surprised if these guys are from anywhere but the US of A.

Funky Jazz Fifties Style With Us We Lazq

It seems some musical eras get their fans decades later. The popular colorful band from Egypt Us We Lazq just put out a song that sounds like a fifties party. They are being lead by one of their female vocalists who put it all together for this track about imagination and having too many choices--when in fact you got none.

The song plays politics and talks about land owners, the broke and the uneducated folks. This is a humoreous song from an idealist with nothing to his/her name. It's easy to speak ill of those in charge, but if you are placed in charge, you will learn that you can change little.

As far as music goes, I love how the song ends on a very Egyptian folkloric and dance friendly melody. This is how Us We Lazq keeps their rivals guessing, invent something and break the mold.

The four dudes who make up the Egyptian pop band strike back.....the four incredibly talented entertainers. Each of the four band members have a successful stand alone career. Among them there are the actors, solo singers, composers, TV presenters and much more. This time they reunite for Egypt's sake.

Their comeback album of 2010 was pretty good, but then this revolution started and shadowed the comeback album. Now, they just released a patriotic song for Egypt where they call on people to do something for Egypt. We have done something great, and history has witnessed it....now let's go back to work and make Egypt great once again.

I like this kind of responsible attitude, I know Egyptians agree on this with the exception of political figures and their supporters. As a song, this is not the greatest or the strongest, but what makes this song terrific is its timely message. The vocals are done right to express this somber moment.

It's a sad day when the brightest rock music band in Egypt--and most indie one gets picked to do a song for Coca Cola. The insult does not end there, Coca Cola also hires Aida Ayoubi as she makes her way back into the music scene. I know it's a tough market out there, and that soda giant knows this very well...so they bribe those entertainers to try to appeal the young angry and indie spirit Egypt is experiencing those few past years.

Cairo, and Aida are awesome musicians, they come from tow different eras with very passionate and rebellious songs. I do not like to drink soda and wish less people would drink it, but I like the music of those two acts. But wait, a third act joined the party, Egypt's hottest rapper Zap Tharwat also gets his moment under the soda sun.

This is the promotional music video for the soda company and it's a really good song....Let Yourself Go, says the song....and that's what will happen if you drink too many sodas...Get crazy says the song and don' worry about people and what they say....they will say you are fat once you had too many sodas. Amir Eid, the lead of Cairokee wrote this song! He is a lyrical boy wonder.

I love how soda company try to get culture through music....and those bands like the extra cash they get in exchange for their music and promotional endorsements. There's a happy smiley face, balloons and such. You will balloon yourself if you keep drinking sodas. And yes, you are too crazy if you substitute sodas for health drinks.

The Exotic Muslim Dude Who Rocks Is One Direction Zayn Malik

Zayn Malik is often referred to as the coolest member of One Direction. The incredibly handsome rebellious kid whose tattoos and nonchalant behavior, there is an observant Muslim boy. the young singer was still deeply hurt by the remarks — many of which attacked the singer for his religion.


This all started when Zayn shared a photo that showed his girlfriend and his family celebrating Eid, a Muslim holiday. On October 3, Celebuzz reported that Malik got a bunch of hateful messages on Twitter, making fun of his religion.

A practicing Muslim, Zayn, admitted he gets online abuse duty to his religious beliefs. “You can say whatever you want about me, I’m not really bothered. But when it starts to upset people I care about or I hear about it from my mum, then that’s a problem."

“My little cousin put up a family picture at Eid because she got a photo with Perrie and she was so happy about it. But then everybody just gave it to me double barrel,” he explained. I think the good comes with the bad. He also have fans all over the world, love it or hate it many of them are Muslims tween girls. 

"I believe that your religion should be between you and whoever your belief is in," said Malik in a recent interview. "I don’t think you should stick it in people’s faces. I think you should just keep it to yourself, and that’s how I’ve always been with it. I just had seen a few things that had annoyed me. I thought we had moved away from that and we’re living in the 21st century and people could accept people from different religions," he added.

To his credit he has done so himself  he is not sporting his religion around. He is not making points about things he can and cannot do because of Islam. He is just one of the guys who most of us find harmless pop stars who do well for their fans. He is not on One Direction because of his religion, but because of his talent, good looks and marketability.

He comes form a traditional family and he observes holidays, and celebrations with them. He grew up as a minority and with that you must hold into your values. Christians celebrate holidays and so do Jews and Hindus and what's not. If those attackers are against all religions, it's a one thing, if they are not for Islam--then too bad for them. It's all about family, we are born into a religion regardless of what people of faith have you believe   

Zayn Malik should really not sweat the small stuff, instead he he should focus on the millions of supporters that he has sending him love every day, it isn't easy to ignore the haters—especially when they are attacking your religion. It has not been an easy road for Zayn, who has gotten really upset over the angry tweets.

Speaking of abuse he receives from some people on Twitter, he told The Sun's Fabulous magazine: “Nasty things [were said] like I’m a terrorist, and this and that. How can you justify that? How can you call me that and get away with it?

"[They] shouldn’t have wound me up, but [they] did," he said, admitting that the negative, degrading messages that he has received have managed to get under his skin. Of course, this is normal—what can anyone expect from a 19-year-old kid? This is all new to him and, sadly, his religion has made him a target.

It really hurts when other Muslims attack him for not doing what they think is right, the guy is no saint and neither are we. We like to tell other people how to live their lives, but when it comes to our own lives, they are riddled with imperfections. Such ignorant comments will further isolate a young and talented man who can make a positive impact. He is just a kid who likes to sing and to self promote, if you disagree then go deactivate your Facebook account.

Alif Ensemble Spices Up Arabic Music

Good bands start out by being the fruit of the labor of many friends who think they are good enough to entertain. Hence, comes Alef Ensemble, a band that emerged from a broad spectrum of talent from all around the Arab world. The namesake draws inspiration from the Arabic Alphabet and team up talents from from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt and Iraq.


Oud-centered music by Khyam Allami, in partnership with two of the most resourceful and independent Arabic musicians of today, Palestinian composer and vocalist Tamer Abu Ghazaleh and Egyptian electronica musician Maurice Louca, the Alif Ensemble is a pan-Arabic collaboration. Many are the bands that take credit for brining varying musical styles. But in the core of Alif Ensemble one finds both traditional and contemporary Arabic music disciplines, including percussionist Khaled Yassine (Lebanon) and bassist Khaled Omran (Syria).

Their strong suits include contemporary Arabic poetry by writers including the late Iraqi-Assyrian poet Sargon Boulus (the first time his words have been set to music in Arabic) and late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. Young people appreciate poetry, but they love it if music accompanied it.

Their efforts have already caught the eyes of the global press, the UK's The Wire magazine witnessed their first ever performance and came to described the Alif Ensemble as: "a vehicle for original composition, attuned to the traditions of Arabic music, but applying a rock dynamic to their delivery."

Something that allowed the band to perform in the  summer 2012 at many UK based music festivals. The Wire went on, “The dominant Alif character is one of a collective sound, each member working at the service of the compositions, rarely stepping forward to solo, and usually sounding equally balanced,"

Few things can motivate musicians like good press, but a great audience always helps. This is a band that offers two different things, the Western listener can appreciate the dealing musical instruments and Arabic twists. The Arab listener will enjoy the poetry and the the throwback music

Joussour is not your typical band, it's a throwback band to the ancient history of the Middle East region. The band is made-up of musicians from different cultural background. Which makes it a lot easier for them to turn out a diverse mix of music from Mesopotamia and the Levant including folkloric, contemporary, instrumental and vocal pieces, and the various types and stages of oriental songs in general.

The Band employs a style reflects the rich cultural tapestry of the region's varying cultures and traditions. This is done using a new creative musical language which reflects their capabilities as musicians to perform various types and styles of music, and expresses at the same time their renewed faith in their heritage and the importance of its interaction with contemporary musical genres.

The Band's namesake 'joussour' illustrates that, the word itself means 'bridges' in Arabic, more like a time-machine I would call them. The band weave together different cultural background, which comes with a unique musical style deeply rooted in history. The band started in 2007, and is led by Syrian musician Salah Ammo. Since its establishment, the group has performed several concerts, inside and outside of Syria, and is today considered one of the most important groups in Syria, due to its representation of the songs and cultures of the region. The band has yet to reach out to Europe, even though their music is the exact kind that has the across culture appeal.

So, if you think Arabic or Islamic music is too modern for you, you can go back in history and enjoy this the Orthodox Syriac tradition, a song about the divinity of God. This song is about breaking bread together.

The boys of Black Theama is turning up the heat by joining forces with another delightful Egyptian voice Mohammed Mohie. Together they are celebrating the storyteller.

I did not see these two musical acts performing a duet like this, they did however appear together in a concert a while back. This is a dramatic song, which explains Mohamed Mohie's vocal credo. To lighten up the mood and enrich the music showcase, Black Theama is the guest.

Both stars are benefiting  Black Theama is tabbing in into the history and the name recognition of Mohie's, and he is reaching out to their young and energized  fan base that pack concert halls. The song is about the touch life some have where nothing seems to go right for certain segment of people.

I do feel the song is missing the fireworks elements, the song never peaks, and feels like a letdown, maybe that's because we expected a more colorful song from those musical acts.

Guys tend to have different images and different expectations for them ladies, and that's why they took on rock and roll music to tell a different story--far from perfect one. Unlike pop and romance music, rock does not engage in false advertising, let's not waste time in talking and spring into action.

Salalem Band Finds The Stairways To Heaven

Among the many diverse Egyptian rock bands, stands Salalem. A band that takes it's name from an Arabic word that means stairs. They might not make as much noise and fireworks as the other bands, but they constantly make better songs that promote hope. I like hope and optimistic voices in Egypt, the people need some joy.

Salalem is funky without being silly, they are retro without being overbearing. This is the feel I am sensing from their new song and music video. They are just a group of friends who happen to be musicians."Life is a bedroom" is the title of this new light rock gem.

You must really love those t-shirts the band members sport. This is the band's second music video following another one they released in 2011. They filmed this music video at a local liberary in one affluent Cairo pocket.

KARMA: Spanish Guitar Egyptian Style With Amr Tantawy

I love Spanish guitar as much as the next guy, love the smooth and playful instrument where few strokes can get you to dance  dream and to love the moment. There's a new old name in Egyptian flavor Spanish guitar and he is climbing his way to the top of the charts. His nae is Amr Tantawy and he is ready to play in the big league.

Seriously, why does it have to have the name Amr? First Amr Diab made is popular and hip to experiment with the guitar in Arab pop. Then Amr Moustafa did dozens of melodies wit the Guitar, and now comes Amr Tantawy with his guitar academy. Amr composes music and brings so much happiness with his musical gift. Amr has performed his guitar as a member of the Amr Diab band and he has done his own shows as well.

Amr adores the Latin style guitar, melodies and beats, he has already released an album with his take on such global music. He has been celebrated as the most famous guitar player in Egypt and Arabia. He has been playing the guitar for 22 years and he has been in the business for a really long time. Give his "Karma" piece an opportunity to dazzle you.

Generation X Egyptian Duet By Like Jelly

He wants to giver he iPhone 6, she wants a Blackberry instead, crowd eats it up. She tells him a guy just flirted with her, he gets worked up. She met his mom, she hates his mom. She plans to love him, he wanted to give her a teddy-bear.

This is Youssra El Hawary and band called Like Jelly, local band. They talk about Facebook where they claim in a relationship Together they perform with laughter and humor that filled the venue. This is a kind of cool twist for Indie musicians in Egypt, they are really making a lot of cool performances  and the audience are winning.

This is one of the good thing about bringing down the Mubarak regime, freeing the soul of so many gifted and repressed singers.
